Over the course of twelve years directing, James has produced a plethora of short films, commercials and music videos. In 1997 he won the MuchMusic Best Alternative video award for his dance video/short film "Synaptic Response" by ambient electronic act Legion of Green Men, for which he was also nominated for Best Director. That film also won a silver Broadcast Design Award and bronze at the Imagina Pixel competition in Monte Carlo. The animated/live action video "Squeeze Toy" by The Boomtang Boys won Best Dance video and a silver medal at the Vancouver Effects and Animation Festival two years later. In 2003 he received another MuchMusic Video Award for the song "Brother Down" by Sam Roberts. In addition he has directed music videos for Nickelback, the Barenaked Ladies and a multitude of others.
James was formerly a partner and Creative Director at Topix Computer Graphics and Animation Inc. where, over the course of his thirteen year tenure, he created animation, design and post-production effects for a multitude of films, music videos and commercials. He has also worked in a freelance capacity with most of the major post-production houses in Toronto including Spin Productions, 567 VFX, AlterEgo, Mr. X and Soho Post. Artists such as Ang Lee, Atom Egoyan, George Romero, Robert LePage, Patricia Rozema, Kari Skogland and Floria Sigismondi, among others, have benefited from his talents.
